Stainless Steel 409 pipes are produced from an alloy of ferritic stainless steel containing 10.5–11.7% chromium and negligible carbon, which increases formability and weldability. These pipes provide moderate corrosion resistance, especially in exhaust gas atmospheres, and satisfactory oxidation resistance at high temperatures. SS 409 pipes have a tensile strength of approximately 380–550 MPa and a yield strength of approximately 170 MPa. These pipes also provide good thermal conductivity and ductility and are thus suitable for high-temperature applications. The low carbon content prevents carbide precipitation during welding, and this prevents instability and ensures consistent performance.
