Iron makes up the majority of stainless steel 316L flanges, with less than 0.03% carbon, 10–14% nickel, 2–3% molybdenum, and 16–18% chromium. This composition offers superior weldability and increased corrosion resistance. Mechanically, SS 316L flanges have a 40% elongation, a yield strength of 170 MPa, and a tensile strength of about 485 MPa. In chloride environments, the molybdenum content improves resistance to pitting and crevice corrosion. Under high-temperature and corrosive service conditions, the low carbon content preserves structural integrity and durability by reducing carbide precipitation during welding.
